Protests to greet Labor Day

BAGUIO CITY (April 27) — With the call “Labanan ang kagutuman, pambubusabos at matinding panunupil sa mamamayan. Patalsikin ang peke, korap, papet at pasistang rehimeng GMA!” Kilusang Mayo Uno-Cordillera (KMU) will celebrate labor day.

On May 1, workers and advocates, here, will have a cultural march from Sunshine Park through Session Road, to Magsaysay Avenue at 9 a.m. and gather in a rally at the People’s Park.

Leonida Tungdagui, KMU public information officer, said labor groups will rally to demand release of Crispin Beltran, Anak-pawis partylist representative, who was arrested on the basis of charges to sedition filed in 1985, and demand for Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s resignation.

The whole-day protest action will also feature photo and art exhibits, film showing and community painting.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) has also set activities on the Labor Day, highlighting the distribution of work scholarship certificates primarily to fresh high school graduates and unemployed people in the ages 18-55 at the Baguio Convention Center at 9 a.m.

This work scolarship program aims to provide skills and competencies to job seekers through training programs that are directly connected to existing jobs for immediate employment. DoLE has also organized three jobs fair: one in Bangued, Abra, another in Baguio Convention Center sponsored by the Philex Mines, and another job fair sponsored by the City Hall.

DoLE calls these jobs fair as labor-intensive programs. # Aura Irene P. Semanero/MMSU Intern for NORDIS
