Easter College celebrates 100th anniversary

“We shall never cease to love thee though we say farewell.” This line from the Easter School Hymn was proven true last Sunday afternoon, April 9, when more than 500 alumni from the elementary, high school and college departments were joined by faculty and staff, community and church friends in a grand parade to commemorate Easter College’s (formerly Easter School) centennial. The parade started at the Baguio Convention Center passing through Session and Bokawkan Roads and ending at the Easter College grounds in Guisad.

The parade was highlighted by the participation of the so-called Centenarians – the oldest living alumni of Easter namely, Charlotte Sagubo Sinong (batch 1926), Petra Pecua Sucdad (batch 1937), Priscilla Camdas Balacio (batch 1939), Anne Pucay Dumo (batch 1939), and Elizabeth Pucay Bagcal (batch 1941). They rode a float decorated with flowers forming the Easter College seal.

Aside from the alumni and staff, other participants included Brent School, Episcopal Church Women, Easter Weaving Room, EDNCP Clergy Spouses Association, Metro Baguio Deanery, Pinsao Pilot Project Barangay and Central Guisad Barangay.

An exhibit entitled “Revisiting the Past for a Better Tomorrow” was also opened at the Easter College Multipurpose Hall with centenarian Charlotte Sagubo Sinong cutting the ribbon. The exhibit showcased photographs from the Easter School’s early days including those of the pioneer teachers and students and other memorabilia. The exhibit ended on April 16.

The day ended with a bonfire and pattong organized by the Easter College Alumni Foundation with the help of students and community members.

Easter College was established in 1906 by the Rt. Rev. Charles Henry Brent, the first missionary bishop of the Philippine Episcopal Church. It was founded on Easter Week thus its name Easter School. Elementary education was the first offering until the high school department opened in 1964 and later the college department in 1995.

Other activities included: Easter Mass at 9 a.m. at the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church; Easter Egg Hunt and Parlor Games; Planting of the Centennial Tree; Sportsfest Championship Games; Easter Cañao and batch picnic; launching of the scholarship program; Centennial Bonfire and closing program. A Centennial Golf Tournament started April 17 at Camp John Hay. # Mayette B. Iniguid for NORDIS
