Cordi workers’ forum tackles socio-econ crisis

BAGUIO CITY (Apr. 11) — Around 90 workers from different workplaces, urban poor and individuals in the Cordillera region gathered for an All Workers Forum last April 9 at the St. Elizabeth Training Hall here. The said activity was initiated by the Cordillera Workers Alliance (CWA), a region-wide coalition of industrial workers, laborers, urban poor and advocates fighting for the recognition of labor and social rights of workers.

Carrying the theme “The Political and Economic Crisis and its Impact to the Workers”, the said forum’s objectives are to update the participants on the current international and national socio-economic situation, and enable them to relate these with their actual living conditions.

Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU)-Cordillera Regional Coordinator Lorico “Ka Jun” Espejo said the forum is very timely considering the present workers’, as well as the Filipino masses’, political and economic plight.

He added that the forum is part of build-up activities for the commemoration of the International Labor Day this coming May 1.

KMU National Chairperson Elmer “Ka Bong” Labog was the main speaker of the forum.

In his speech, Labog tackled the political and economic situation in both the international and national communities.

Later on, an open forum highlighted the activity where participants shared their situation in their respective workplaces and communities. Some of the participants gave their testimonies on their conditions and connected these to the country’s political and economic crisis as lectured in the activity.

Moreover, Labog criticized the continued illegal detention of Anakpawis party list and KMU Chairperson Emeritus Crispin “Ka Bel” Beltran who was arrested when Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) implemented Presidential Proclamation 1017 (the State of National Emergency).

He reiterated the Free Ka Bel Movement’s call for the Philippine National Police (PNP) to immediately release Beltran, to drop the fabricated charges against him and to respect civil liberties.

Labog further stressed that KMU is still demanding for a nationwide P125 wage hike and the immediate ouster of GMA.

Meanwhile, KMU-Cordillera is inviting all Cordillerans to join the regional celebration of Labor Day on May 1 here. # KMU-Cordillera
