Stop ARIA election — Abra farmers

BAGUIO CITY (Apr. 11) — Members of the Organisasyon dagiti Nakukurapay nga Umili ti Sitios (Ornus) in Bangued and Tayum towns in Abra called for the postponement or temporary stoppage of the Abra River Irrigators Association’s (ARIA) General Assembly Election slated on April 29. The group claims that there are issues and anomalies that need to be addressed before holding the election.

In a February 1 resolution, the group said the membership and registration process is questionable because not all farmers using the irrigation system are allowed to register.

Ornus also demands an inventory and audit of all ARIA equipment and properties, and the formation of an interim independent body that will oversee the elections. The group is also calling for the investigation of anomalies and irregularities in the association.

The group claimed that ARIA officers failed to inform majority of the members of the current issues the association is facing.

Ornus said the anomalies and irregularities should be resolved before holding the elections. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS
