Baguio urban poor group says GMA betrays Filipinos |
||
GMA likened to Judas BAGUIO CITY (Apr. 11) — The urban poor commemorated the Holy Week with a mock Station of the Cross at the Malcolm Square here, and likened Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) to Judas and the Romans who persecuted Jesus Christ. According to Organisasyon dagiti Nakurapay nga Umili ti Siudad (Ornus) Chair Ignacio Pangket, just as Judas betrayed Jesus, GMA betrayed the Filipino people. He said GMA sold the Filipino people’s land and resources to foreign creditors just as Judas sold Jesus. He added that GMA also lied to the Filipinos when she failed to fulfill her promise of enough food, shelter and good education. Pangket further said that just as the Romans persecuted Jesus for exposing the corruption and evils of the Roman Empire, GMA persecuted progressive leaders and organizations critical to her administration. He said GMA manipulated the law and resorted to brute force to silence the opposition. Pangket also likened Jesus’ sufferings (when the Romans whipped and crowned him with thorns) to the sufferings of the Filipino masses when the GMA administration implemented the Reformed Value Added Tax (RVAT) law causing the unrelenting price hikes of basic commodities. Moreover, Pangket stressed that just as the Romans crucified Jesus, GMA is pushing for the charter change to ensure her continued stay in power. He said that the proposed constitutional amendments GMA is pushing would crucify the Filipino masses to poverty. The group previously planned a procession supposedly to be held on April 10, but the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) did not allow them to pursue the activity. The BCPO claimed that the group did not have a permit for their activity. However, Ornus’ Geraldine Cacho, in an interview, countered BCPO’s claim saying they applied for a permit but was not approved. Nevertheless, the group proceeded with their march along Session Road that ended with a short program at the Malcolm Square here. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS Post your comments, reactions to this article |
