Blind poet among Cordi’s top students |
||
BAGUIO CITY (Apr. 7) – A “blind poet” is chosen to be one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines for the Cordillera Administrative Region (TOSP-CAR) on April 5, Wednesday, at the University of Baguio. Based on the process, the 18 student nominees were screened from several contenders nominated by their tertiary schools and organizations in the region; cutting down to 10 as selected by the Board of (five) Judges, accordingly to their leadership, academic excellence, community involvement and values. Despite his visual impairment, Chester Stone Batnag, a 19 year-old Kankanaey from Sagada, Mountain Province, developed his poetry writing skills. He had been writing under the pseudonym “Blind Poet”, as he was published in a regional government paper and a regional newspaper here. He won in several poetry and quiz bee contests both in the regional and Luzon-wide levels. And just last March, he was hailed a cum laude at the Easter College, bearing the degree Bachelor of Secondary Education, Major in Mathematics. Aside from Batnag, the other students in the TOSP-CAR roster are Theodore Solang (Mt. Province State Polytechnic College); Charisse Anne Lumanlan (University of the Philippines Baguio); Joel Bongsilen (Apayao State College); Jonathan Barcelo and Randyl Tabajonda (both from St. Louis University); Gilyn Abordo (STI); Phonexiematte Kierulf and John Ducusin (both from the University of Baguio); and Jamel Moyano (AMA). The 10 students will represent the Cordillera at the National TOSP selection. Meanwhile, as part of its centennial celebration, the Easter College community will have a parade on Sunday, April 9 from the Post Office to Easter College. The assembly time is at 3 p.m. # Mayette Iniguid and Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS Post your comments, reactions to this article |
