Cordillera tribal leaders’ stand known today |
||
Will they stand by GMA? BAGUIO CITY (Aug. 14) — Tribal elders and leaders from Benguet, Mt. Province, Kalinga, Ifugao, and Abra are expected to take a stand on the national political crisis as they convene today in the 3rd Metro Baguio Tribal Elders-Leaders Assembly (MBTELA) at the Resurrection Cathedral Multipurpose Hall here. With the theme “Makipaset iti panagsango iti agdama a problema ti pagilian! Iyabante ti tarigagay ti Nainsigudan nga Umili!” the elders’ assembly will discuss and unite on pertinent issues both in the local and national levels. The activity specifically aims to educate tribal elders and leaders on the national situation and the political crisis and the impact on the country’s politics and economy, and to encourage them to take a unified position on this, including regional and local issues. Assembly convenors also hope to come up with resolutions addressed to concerned government units and political leaders regarding issues affecting indigenous peoples, particularly demolition of urban poor houses, lack of decent employment, and issues on utilities such as water and electricity. In a statement, the MBTELA said foreign multinational companies have violated indigenous peoples’ collective rights with the Arroyo administration allowing the entry of such firms in the Cordillera region, especially in relation to mining. They also pointed out that the involvement of President Arroyo in alleged electoral fraud and corruption would merit the call for her resignation, the MBTELA said. The MBTELA first convened in 2003 to address tribal wars and conflicts which did not spare migrant indigenous peoples in the city. After the first assembly, tribal elders and leaders agreed to unify their ranks to launch an education to end tribal war as a practice. In the same occasion, various tribes forged a covenant to prevent tribal wars from spilling into the city. The second assembly, convened in November 2004, discussed ancestral domain problems and the Binodngan situation in the region. Organisasyon dagiti Nakurapay nga Umili ti Syudad (ORNUS), Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) and the Binodngan Peoples Organization (BPO) convene the MBTELA. # Abigail T. Bengwayan for NORDIS |
