Communities unite against Nickel Asia subsidiary

More than 300 participants attended the Aywanan Environment and Mining Summit held on August 24 at the St. Mary’s School Gym in Sagada Mountain Province where they made a united stand and plan of action against the mining applications of the Cordillera Exploration Company, Inc., a subsidiary of Nickel Asia Corporation, covering more than 60,000 hectares in the Cordillera and Ilocos Sur province.

Strong rains failed to deter more than 300 community representatives, peoples organizations and church leaders from the Cordillera region and Ilocos Sur province to attend the Aywanan Environment and Mining Summit on August 24 in Sagada, Mountain Province aimed to build the broadest unity against the mining application of Cordillera Exploration Company, Inc. (CEXCI), a subsidiary of Nickel Asia Corporation.

Cagayanos want blacksand mining disguised as “dredging” stopped

The Provincial Board of Cagayan backed the people’s call asking the president to stop immediately the dredging operation in the Cagayan River, which they believe is magnetite mining. Governor Manuel Mamba sanctioned the dredging through a memorandum of agreement that did not pass the provincial board and in the absence of permit from the DPWH, as required by law.

Government and corporate investment projects continue to displace indigenous peoples (IP) in many Asian countries, including the Philippines,  from their ancestral lands according to the statement of indigenous peoples groups presented during the 12th session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) on July 16 in Geneva, Switzerland by the Task Force Indigenous Peoples.

MGB-CAR eyes minahang bayan by December

MGB-CAR director Faye Apil bared the agency have finished hearing applications from small scale mining groups from Itogon, Tuba and Mankayan, and eyeing the declaration of minahang bayan in Benguet by December.
