Baguio night club workers increase

BAGUIO CITY – Number of club workers expected to increase this Christmas season in the city.

According to Baguio Association of Bars and Entertainers Society (BABEs) president Allan Bandoy, not only during the Christmas season but with the big events lined up in the city until summer that the number of entertainers, sex workers, dancers, singers and comedians rises up until 30 percent from the original number of club workers here in the city.

He said that Babes has 700 members composed of men, women and transgenders working in forty nine clubs and night time establishments here.

He added that its not only during the Christmas season where workers from different places such as Tarlac, Pangasinan and as far as Manila comes up to Baguio but also during big events like the Fil-Am Golf tournament, Mining Summit, conferences and others.

Bandoy stated that there is a difficulty in monitoring all the night club workers and entertainers this season specially those freelance workers or those who do not work in an establishment and most of them are visitors. It is easier to monitor those who work in establishments because we can talk to the owners for monitoring.

He said that the group monitors all the forty nine establishments and make their rounds three times a week. Stricter monitoring is applied to new establishments and new employees of bars if they comply to requirements such as pap smear exams every week to secure the workers safety and their customers. Members of babes are required to get pink cards and submit to a weekly medical test for Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI).

Bandoy stated that in celebration of the World AIDS Day, with the theme Getting to Zero, Zero New HIV Infection, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS related Deaths they will work harder and stricter to make Baguio a good example of free AIDs related death and HIV infection. In the first quarter of 2017 they will make sure that all night time establishments will comply to requirements before they can work and secure a permit. #
