11 Cordi LGUs get seal of disaster preparedness

BAGUIO CITY — Eleven local governement units (LGUs) of the Cordillera were among those awarded the Seal of Disaster Preparedness by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Those awarded include the provinces of Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province; the municipalities of Bangued, Sallapadan, Lagangilang of Abra; Pudtol and Flora of Apayao; La Trinidad of Benguet; Bontoc of Mountain Province and Tabuk City.

DILG Cordillera Regional Director John Castañeda explained that the said award was among the projects of the late Secretary Jesse Robredo. He added that the Seal of Disaster Preparedness is similar to the Seal of Good Housekeeping which aims to encourage better local government management.

The seal also seeks to reinforce disaster response and risk reduction capability of LGUs.

Castañeda disclosed that other municipalities and provinces need not worry because this is just the first round and that they should strive harder to pass the next round.

Criteria for the Seal of Disaster Preparedness include compliance to the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 and the crafting of a well communicated and understood calamity contingency plan. All nominees must pass all criteria to receive the seal.

The conferred provinces and municipalities would also receive additional funds for disaster management and risk reduction projects and programs. The awards is open to all provinces, municipalities and cities nationwide. # nordis.net
