Impending tribal war averted in MP

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Sept. 28) — An impending tribal war between Barlig and Besao, Mountain Province was averted after a murder case that could have fueled it was settled the indigenous way.

Using the indigenous way of resolving conflicts, called the Alternative Dispute Resolution, Bontoc Mayor Franklin Odsey and the Council of Elders of Bontoc, Besao and Barlig were able to resolve the inter barangay conflict between Gueday, Besao and Lias of Barlig, all of Mt Province on September 17.

A case of murder involving tribal members of Barlig and Besao, which was at a deadlock after initial negotiations for settlement failed is now settled after both parties agreed with a P 200, 000 assistance for the aggrieved party after seven hours of deliberations.

The family of the suspect gave an initial payment of P170,000 and the remaining payment to be given before November 17.

Authorities said the victim was from Besao.

Cordillera Police Regional Director Eugene Martin, who also hails from Mt. Province, lauded not only to the parties involved but also to the local officials and council of elders who worked hard to keep the peace within the locality. # Police Regional Office-Cordillera
