A reflection on the continuing struggle
of the LCMCo workers

By Episcopal Diocese of Santiago

August 20, 2005

The Lord entrusted to us His creation. As good stewards, he expected the protection, fair sharing and mutual enjoyment of the bounties of his Creation: that all may be blessed with his surmountable creation! The blessings He left on earth was more than enough for everyone’s existence if shared according to each one’s felt need.

The struggle between the Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company between the management and the employees is a picture of the struggle between the rich and the poor; the loaded and the empty; between those who have more than enough and those who have nothing.

The intensifying violence happening between these two groups concretizes the scenario of the rich not giving to the poor ; the loaded not giving some to the empty; those who have more than enough not sharing to those who have nothing.

Again, we are witnessing the greed of Adam and Eve! Despite the overflowing blessings around them, they still wanted to acquire what was not for them!

The rich want more riches, the loaded want to be overloaded, and those who have more than enough still want more than what they need!

Peace will never prevail if we forget that we are only steward of everything around us: the land, the water, the plants, including our very lives!

In the midst of these challenges that our brothers are facing, let us be reminded of our responsibilities as one of the creations of God: to be good stewards in the preservation, conservation and protection of his creation!

We call on God’s people to convince the hearts of the rich, the loaded, and those who have more than enough to share what they have to the poor, the empty, and those who have nothing.

We also call on God’s people to join hands and help the poor to rise from their lowliness, the empty to be loaded, and those who have nothing to be given some possession.

And most of all, we ask the Lord to forgive us for the wrongs we have done to His Creation, and to continue directing and guiding us to be good stewards to His given bounties, while having mutual enjoyment of it. #
