“The Lord put me here.”

By Norma P Dollaga

KASIMBAYAN

June 16, 2005

This was the claim of Mrs Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo regarding her presidency in the face of very serious evidence of election fraud.

But we wonder who is this God whom GMA is referring to. Certainly it is not the God of truth and justice. We don’t believe that God of the suffering people blessed GMA’s illegitimate victory.

We are sick and tired of GMA who always uses the name of God as the one who put her in power. We are angry at this hypocrisy using the name of God whom she claims to be always on her side. For as far as people are concerned, we never felt a bit of godliness under the corrupt-ridden Arroyo government especially that last year’s election is under question again given the recent scandalizing exposé on a taped conversation between her and Commissioner Garcillano. Every man and woman in the street cast doubt whether she has moral ascendancy to rule.

But even before this exposé, GMA‘s religiosity does not qualify sincerity. GMA’s political gimmicks consist of plans for the public to believe that she is ordained by God, thinking that this could be a magical way to deceive the people. But the people cannot be swindled by simply telling them about God, religion and piety. For no matter how many bishops, priests and religious leaders she calls to Malacanang to pray for her and supposedly bless her programs and policies, the truth is only genuine service to the people will ever be the proof of faithfulness to God.

If GMA is truly a faithful follower of God, why is it that she never listened to the cries and lamentations of the people? God’s greatest commandment is to love God and thy neighbor. How come that this President who always uses the name of God is waging wars against the people through economic policy that would surely make the poor ones poorer. We ask GMA, who is your God? Surely not the God of the people whom you are grueling everyday by your unjust economic policies. The people whom GMA is extorting day and night until they live in hunger and death are the ones very near to the heart of God. But these people are very far away from the heart of GMA. The burden of the already deprived and dispossessed are too much to bear. Yet

GMA continues to push for additional taxes that will directly affect the poor. How can this be a godly move?

The curtailment of civil and political rights characterizes GMA’s fascist moves against people resisting her unjust rule, thus rising number of human rights activists and peace workers are being killed, tortured and harassed.

How can this self-proclaimed godly President attack the righteousness of defending and fighting for justice, truth and peace?

The list of ungodly leadership seems endless, but our message to GMA is to please stop using the name of God for your glory. No one will believe you except Mike Arroyo, Miguel Arroyo, Iggy and members of your clan and bureaucrat capitalists, big landlords and business who rely on your corruption and greediness to amass wealth and neglect the needs of the poor.

We would like to remind you of this: “But let justice roll down like waters and righsteousness like an everflowing stream. ( Amos 5:24) #
