City employees join Red Cross blood-letting

BAGUIO CITY (Feb. 17) — Twenty two city hall employees and walk-ins marked Valentine’s Day by donating their blood for the local Red Cross. The initial blood-letting was sponsored by the Association of City Employees (ACE) at the city council session hall to heighten awareness of the need to stock up on the life-saving fluid.

More donors could have been tapped but other employees begged off, after having anti-meningococcemia vaccination, noted ACE officer George Bueno.

The Philippine College of Surgeons, through Dr. Honorio Pangilinan and the Red Cross staff headed by administrator Annie Tamayo, backed up the project led by ACE president Policarpio Tamayo. They collected 11 bags of type O blood. Four each for types A and B and three for type AB.

The donors included Dr. John Tinoyan of the Baguio Health Department who is administering the anti-meningo vaccination program for city hall employees. Tamayo has appealed to other organizations to also set their own blood-extraction schedules to help the Red Cross meet the demand for blood during surgeries and other medical emergencies. # RamonDacawi/PIO

City considers residents’ concerns on Asin hydro

BAGUIO CITY (Feb. 17) — The city government assured Asin residents whose properties are crossed by the pipelines of the mini-hydroelectric power plants that their concerns will be considered in the new management scheme being fleshed out for the hydro plants located in Asin, Nangalisan, Tuba town in Benguet.

Around 30 residents of Sipetan to Asin Proper are affected by the pipelines starting from Hydroelectric Plant No. 1 to Hydroelectric Plant No. 2.

In a letter to Yaranon the affected residents want their proposals to be considered by the city council when it renegotiates the operation of the plants with the Baguio Water District before the contract expires in September.

Residents may opt to rent out the area crossed by the pipelines, grant of an electric bill subsidy or grant of the free water extracted from the pipeline to irrigate their farms with proper regulations like gate valves.

They also sought priority contracts for the rehabilitation of damages on the pipelines and priority in employment for the new management scheme.

They also want the rehabilitation and concreting of the pipeline at the second tunnel and the free installation and maintenance of streetlights. # Aileen P. Refuerzo/PIO
