# Robert Tabay/DzEQ

Gov’t workers anxious for tax exemption, salary hike

LAGAWE, Ifugao (Jan. 27) — Lowly paid government workers here are anxiously awaiting the law exempting them from income taxes and increase in their salaries in order to cope with the increasing financial burden.

As the country’s economic crisis is worsening, these government employees are reiterating their call for the government to act on their behalf.

According to Grace Dumawit, a provincial capitol worker, the existing minimum wage is no longer enough to maintain a decent living for government workers because of the constant increase in prices of basic commodities.

“The government should immediately address this problem by at least implementing the tax exemption if they cannot yet increase our salaries to ease our economic miseries in coping with the periodic price increase of commodities,” added Mr. Miguel Catamo an employee of the national government office.

Salary hike and non-wage benefits are some of the strategies contemplated by the government as one of the safety nets to protect and help government employees battle the economic crisis presently affecting the country. # Dan B. Codamon/ PIA-Ifugao
