BCPO in constant liason with Muslims

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 11) — Baguio City Police Chief Superintendent Isagani Nerez revealed in a Kapihan here today his office meets regularly with Muslim groups in the city which helped established better relationships between the law enforcers and the Islamic groups here.

“This is part of the program which aimed that respect begets respect,” says Nerez.

He claimed there are at least 4,963 Muslims in the region 90 % of whom are Maranaw traders.

He added there is a very low-recorded crime, mostly petty crimes, committed by Muslims, which are usually settled amicably, he added. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS

NPA has tactical alliance with MILF

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 11) — Cordillera Regional Police Officer General Leonardo E. Dionisio claims that the New Peoples’ Army and the Muslim Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have tactical alliance due to their common means to achieve their different agenda.

“They don’t trust each other and they have different agenda but their similar means of achieving their agenda led to their tactical alliance,” claims Dionisio in a Kapihan held here today.

DOH-CAR claims meningo not a monopoly in the region

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 11) – Elnoria Bugnosen claimed in a media forum here today that there are no reported cases of meningo in the city and the region and calls citizen “no need to panic.”

Bugnosen also claimed that meningo is no longer a disease confined in our area as different cases were reported as far as Mindanao.

She shared that they are pursuing with their program to address the case through information dissemination in coordination with the local government unit. She adds that the agency is still the led agency providing logistics like vaccines and technical assistance to the LGUs.

She advices the public who encounter any symptoms of meningo like fever, flu, among others should report it to the hospital institutions. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS

DOH-CAR vigilant in monitoring bird flu

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 11) — The Cordillera regional office of the DOH is strengthening the Task Force Bird Flu in monitoring the bird flu here in the region. According to Elnoria Bugnosen of DOH-Baguio, the task force has representatives from the different agencies and local government units in the region.

She claims that during the first quarter several orientations on the bird flue are to take place in the different provinces in the region.

According to Bugnoses, their targets are the areas where the indigenous inhabitants practice bird catching. She advises the residents not to disturb these migratory birds so that they can easily monitor them if there are carriers of the avian flu virus. # Arthur L. Allad-iw for NORDIS

Liquor and amusement code intensified

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 20) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon last Tuesday ordered the full implementation of the distance restrictions on the location of liquor-dispensing establishments and amusement centers in the city.

In the Administrative Order (AO) No. 10, Yaranon gave the affected business persons until March 20 to conform to the law requirements; thus, they can obtain the necessary permits.

Liquor stores, nightclubs, bars, disco houses, beer gardens, computer shops and billiards halls cannot renew their business permits next year when they violate the distance restrictions.

In the latest AO, the liquor and amusement codes restrict the said establishments near government buildings or grounds, schools, hospitals, churches and parks.

Ordinary bars or liquor retail stores (no music and entertainment) must be 50 linear meters away; 200 linear meters for nightclubs and bars (with music, video or band entertainers); 50 linear meters for billiard halls; and 1,000 linear meters for computer and video game centers. # Aileen P. Mayor Forms World Expo Committee

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 20) — Mayor Braulio Yaranon issued Administrative Order (AO) No. 12-06 last January 18. It is for the formation of an executive committee for the city’s participation in the upcoming World Leisure Exposition 2006 in Hangzhou, China.

The mayor’s order names himself as honorary chairperson, councilor Perlita Chan-Rondez as honorary vice-chairperson. City tourism officer Benedicto Alhambra and Alfonso Lao are co-chairpersons.

The World Leisure Exposition 2006 will be held from April 22 to October 22, participated by various cities all over the world.

The committee is tasked to seek ways and means so the activity has proper support and participation. They are also to prepare policies, guidelines and measures to ensure the event’s success. # Gaby B. Keith/PIO

Water management project assessed

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 20) — Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Netherlands visited the city last January 17 to assess the impact of the city’s Sustainable Water Integrated Management (SWIM) project funded by the Dutch and Norwegian governments through the Asian Development Bank.

Bert van Woersem and Jetze Heun met with the members of SWIM’s technical working group to evaluate their activities and its results.

The Netherlands and Norwegian governments channeled about US $20 million to the Asian Development Bank to help in the implementation of water policies.

The SWIM program was implemented in the city through the International Council for Local Government Initiatives (ICLEI). The program is under ICLEI’s Water Campaign.

The SWIM program started with series of consultations from September 2004 to July 2005. It has put together the first integrated State of Baguio City’s Water 2004, which served as the basis in crafting the city’s water vision, proposed local water code, mid-term water development and investment plan and local governance mechanism. # Art Killip/PIO
