CEGP gathers campus journalists in Ilocos-wide convention

VIGAN, Ilocos Sur (Sept. 11) — Some 100 campus journalists in the Ilocos region participated during the 3rd Ilocos Region Student Press Convention sponsored by the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP-Ilocos Region) held at the University of Northern Philippines here. The three-day convention, which culminates today, also coincided with the 12th Ilocos Sur Student Press Congress.

With its theme “Strengthen our ranks and uphold campus press freedom”, the activity also rallied some local government officials behind the cause of campus press freedom and the overall media situation in the country.

Two officers of an organization of full-fledged media practitioners enlightened the campus journalists. Arthur Allad-iw, the acting chairperson of the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) was the keynote speaker. NUJP-Baguio Benguet Auditor and Philippine Daily Inquirer correspondent Desiree Caluza talked on the national media situation.

Among the guest speakers were Mark Galanga, editor-in-chief of Tandem, the hosting student publication; Prof. Wigberto Tabutol of UNP, Dr. Lauro Tacbas, University president of UNP; and Vigan City Vice-Mayor Ferdinand Medina. Congressman Luis Singson was also invited but failed to come.

Forum discussions, lectures and skills training on basic, intermediate and advance journalism skills and classroom discussions on economic and political issues were among the convention highlights.

The Ilocos regional chapter of the CEGP includes campus papers from Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. # Lyn V. Ramo for NORDIS
