BAGUIO CITY — With a week before the voters registration period ends, the Kabataan Party list urged the Comelec to extend the registration anew in consideration with the region as most hit by typhoon Pepeng.
“With the current status of the provinces and this city in the Cordillera, it is but indifferent to expect first time voters to go out and register while recovering from the effects left by typhoon Pepeng. It is very inconsiderate for the Comelec not to extend the deadline for registration given these circumstances,” said Marti Josef Cabangon.
“With few days left to register, how can the Comelec accommodate these first time voters? Cabangon asked.
Extending the registration period up to December 15 won’t hurt, pointed out Cabangon adding:
“Besides, I thought the computerization of the polls is supposed to speed up election processes, from preparations to counting of ballots. If the Comelec is not capable of extending the registration period, how can we be assured that there would be no system glitches come election time?”
Earlier, Kabataan Representative Raymond “Mong” Palatino petitioned the Comelec to extend the deadline of voters registration to December 15 in light of the recent tragedies that struck the nation.
The Comelec denied the said petition saying it would be highly inconvenient to extend the registration now for it will delay the preparation for the 2010 elections.
Cabangon rationalized that first time voters, mostly students, will be having a hard time to register given the demands of the adjusted academic calendar.
Last October 19, the said party list conducted a symbolic activity at the Malcom Square here urging youth to support their position to extend registration while calling them (youth) to register. # nordis.net
