Benguet joins anti- plastic bandwagon

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The provincial board adopted Monday a resolution that supported the passing of a law imposing fines on the use of plastic bags in retail outlets.
Introduced by Board Member Nelson Dangwa, the board resolution supporting the passage of H ouse Bill 4134, still pending in the House of Representatives adopts a similar measure Resolution No. 33-09 by the provincial board of Aurora on March 31.
Another province, Quezon, has earlier passed its own Resolution No. 294-08.
The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, or Republic Act 9003 prohibits the use of non-biodegradable plastic materials. HB 4134 proposes an environmental levy of P2.50 for each bag that supermarkets, department stores, and other convenient stores issue.
The Aurora Resolution quotes newspaper reports that 76 to 80% of garbage that float on Manila Bay is synthetic plastic materials.# nordis.net
