BAGUIO CITY — After the devastating blaze that turned 238 stalls into ashes, the sari-sari, dry goods and rice section of the market will undergo reconstruction to the amount of P 25M.

According to Baguio Market-Plaza Cooperative leader (BAMAPCOM)Victor Calimlim, the reconstruction will be funded by the cooperative and the fire victims themselves. Calimlim said the P25 million will not just be for roofing but for the reconstruction of 209 stalls. The remaining stalls which were in the Tobacco section are a separate project as they are covered by a different plan.

Calimlim added that the P25 million worth reconstruction is expected to stand for a hundred years. Calimlim however said since the money will come from BAMAPCOM and the stall owners, they are on the watch for reasonably cheap and sturdy materials. “At least half the initial budget yet could be durable for 50 years,” Calimlim further said.

When asked if monetary assistance is expected from the government, Calimlim answered; “if there is any, it will be much appreciated but as for the moment, we will stick to the original plan, to source out funds from the coop to avoid corruption money to come in”. As estimated, the reconstruction will be completed in 30 days, if not interrupted.

On the other hand, Vice Mayor Daniel Farinas discussed on Thursday during the weekly Ulat sa Bayan that the City Government leaves the temporary restoration to the stall owners for the mean time while plans for the marked development is still in process. # www.nordis.net
