Van dives into ravine in Mountain Province

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Oct. 17) — A family perished in a highway mishap in Mountain Province when a van they were riding to Apayao via Kalinga dived into a 50-meter ravine on Monday noon, October 16.

Cordillera police named the fatalities as Ignacio V. Pancho, 59, resident and local government employee of Brgy Kariktan, Conner, Apayao, his wife Maria, 59, and his sister Caroline Pancho, 45, a Social Welfare Development Office employee at Sadanga, Mt Province and a resident of sitio Omfeg, Bontoc ili, Mt. Province.

Police investigators claimed that the dark green Mitsubishi Delica Van with plate number RAS 228 owned and driven by Ignacio was negotiating the highway curves along sitio Ampawilen, Poblacion, Sadanga in Mt. Province when the front wheel of the vehicle suddenly exploded.

The driver lost control and the van fell into a 50-feet high ravine totally wrecking the vehicle. The victims were rushed by villagers, local officials of Sadanga and policemen to Bontoc General Hospital but were all pronounced dead on arrival (DOA) by the attending physician.

This is the second fatal highway accident along Cordillera Highways in three weeks when a jeepney bound for Natonin town, Mountain Province was buried along a highway by rampaging mud, boulders and sand loosened by rains.
