BAGUIO CITY — The Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) urged the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to let Philex Mining Corporation clean up Agno River as well because it is where most of the mine waste discharged from Philex’s tailings pond 3 now rests.

CPA Deputy Secretary General Santos Mero in an interview underscored that most of the over 20 million metric tons of mine wastes discharged from Philex’s tailings pond 3 (TP3) went to the Agno River and the mine company’s clean up plan is limited to the Balog Creek. He added that the MGB should ensure that Philex also cleans up Agno.

“While MGB Director Leo Jasareno finally heard the plaints of Ilocos environmental and church groups opposing the wholesale plunder of our magnetite resources in the Ilocos region, I think that the DENR should at least suspend MGB Region I Director Carlos Tayag for failing to implement the cease and desist order (CDO) against Taiwanese-owned Wellresource Mining Co. operating in Caparacadan, Caoayan and San Sebastian, San Vicente in Ilocos Sur. That director has contributed to the permanent degradation of the coastal areas within his jurisdiction and his actions or inactions have violated pertinent laws that he is supposed to follow,” Casiño said.

Editorial: Give peace a chance

2 MIN READOur deepest condolences to the families of the three policemen and two soldiers killed in two different encounters with units of the revolutionaries. It is very sad that brothers are being pitted against brothers in the longest running civil war in Asia.

If the war against invading colonizers during Lapu-lapu’s time, during Juan Oraa’s and Mateo Carino’s time against the Spanish and Americans, during the second world war against the Japanese invaders are to be included; this would really be the longest war waged by the Filipino people in defense of the right to be an independent nation. The right to benefit as a people and sustain their generations from their counry’s common resources as against the exportation and waste of its natural resources, – mining produce, its intellectual and human resources, etc., for a few to accumulate profit.

Crossroads: Paper cranes for James Balao

On April 19, we will be celebrating James Balao’s birthday again. Again, he will be absent for the celebration. Again we will be wishing that he is okay where ever he is. And we will again whisper to the winds how he is missed. Cordillera Human Rights Alliance and his family are making paper cranes to be hanged on a tree to remember James.

James was abducted by military men on September 17, 2008 in Tomay, La Trinidad, Benguet. He is among the more than 200 men and women who have been victims of enforced disappearance with the implementation of Oplan Bantay Laya or Operation Freedomwatch under then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In letters sent to his family prior to his abduction, he informed them that he was being followed and watched by State security agents.

From Under This Hat: Dates this April

It is summer time in this part of the world and well into the fiesta season with the election circus to top it all. Aside from watching the circus from a safe distance and trying it once in a while before it passes after May 13, here are some activities to consider for this month:

Saturday the 13th April was the reunion of the clans of the grand couple Maumau (Pablo Cariño) and Chaxadi. The parents of Juan Oraa, Mateo, Espiritu, Payat, Channal, Savay, Tallin and Sison. The ancestors of the many clans of Tublay, Baguio, and La Trinidad. All together they can be a formidable group of community leaders for the Ibaloy, Kankanaey and Kalanguya communities of Benguet and not just another source of politicians and bureaucrats. There are among them who have served their local LGUs, the provincial government, in regional bodies, with national agencies including the police and military forces, and Malacañang. They make their ancestors proud and the reunion is an anual offering in gratitude for the blessings bestowed, and it has for a decade now been a warm renewal of bonding between the so many relatives, some we met for the fist time. Long live.

Labor Watch: Going abroad for better jobs, waiting for uncertainty

The news trending these days is the so-called escalating tension in the Korean Peninsula. According to the big players in the Western media, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea or simply the North Korea is carelessly provoking South to go to war. Reports of the corporate media say the North is challenging its neighbor and hurling threatening statements. The United States posing as the world’s police is again aggressively declaring it will do so-called necessary steps if war will break between the two Korean governments.

According to western powers, North Korea is an isolated country trying to create terror against its neighbors. But how does DPRK’s government know what is happening to the rest of the world? While the rest of the world only get little information, notwithstanding if it is true or not, about North Korea and its people. So that they can only rely on speculations and assumptions made by so-called experts? While so-called isolated state of DPRK who has no citizens working in other countries is freely accessing the internet, web sites and mirrors of other countries, its government has great concerns for the people who have no business at all with the war between the South and North and thus warns them to leave the US-friendly South Korea.

We, the Philippine Task Force for Indigenous Peoples Rights (TFIP), echo the need to hear indigenous peoplesEvoices in the course of the debate on the constitutionality of the Mining Act of 1995. The seemingly lucrative revenues to be collected from myriad mining corporations operating in the country have not reflected on the lives of indigenous communities affected by large-scale mining.

The contribution of the mining sector to the national economy and even to employment remains insignificant. Mining and quarrying is the 3rd lowest in terms of value added to the Philippine economy among the 14 major industries. On the other hand, the mining sector had the highest profit margin of 36.9% in 2006 and 38.9% in 2008.

Weekly Reflections: How to choose leaders (1/2)

The midterm elections for local and national leaders are just around the corner. And so, it is but proper and fitting to remind us once again of some Biblical principles of choosing leaders. The Book of Deuteronomy gives us some important reminders on how to choose our leaders.

Deuteronomy is considered to be a product of serious reflections on leadership, especially on what leaders could do to make or unmake a nation. Although the book talks about the events during Moses’ time, it was actually written, according to Biblical scholars, during the latter years of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, shortly before it was captured by the Babylonians in 586 BCE and the people with their leaders were carried away to Babylon as captives.
