Weekly Reflections: Jack’s ark

July 26, 2009 in general

I have decided to put an end to all people. I will destroy them completely, because the world if full of their violent deeds. Build a boat for yourself out of good timber. Take into the boat with you a male and a female of every kind of animal and of every kind of bird, in order to keep them alive.  Take along all kinds of food for you and for them. Noah did everything that God commanded.—Genesis 6:13-14,19-22

Typhoon Season

Typhoon season is again with us, and this reminds us of a man named Jack, a rich Zambo trader who disappeared from public view about 15 years ago, only to re-appear again lately making an ark in a remote Barangay Magsaysay of the town Roseller T. Lim in the Province of Zamboanga Sibugay. When someone asked him why he was single-handedly making such a huge boat, he simply responded saying he was atoning for his manifold sins committed in the past. The story of his life was published in one of the national dailies.

According to Narciso Sardual, his real name, he used to be one of the richest traders in Zamboanga owning several fishing boats with about 600 workers under him. And since he had enormous money in his hands, he could do anything that he wants, building mansions, lustfully feasting on women of his likes, exploiting his workers, and even killing a lot of people whom he dislike; he would just pay the relatives of his victims. This was the kind of life he lived, until he lost everything, including his wife and family; he was separated from them. Read the rest of this entry →

By MAE JOY PAYTE
www.nordis.net

BAGUIO CITY— While at least three schools here imposed a ten-day class suspension in response to the worsening influenza A(H1N1) outbreak in the city, one of them claim it was not due to the swine flu that it suspended classes.

Suspension of classes in three major schools alarmed city residents about the spread of the disease in academic institutions. The Saint Louis University (SLU), Baguio City National High School (BCNHS) and University of Baguio (UB), cancelled classes in elementary and high school. Read the rest of this entry →

MANKAYAN, Benguet – In a public forum at the Dangwa Hall, Thursday, local folk here insist it is the old underground mine work that caused the massive ground movement along Aurora Street in Barangay Poblacion, despite technical experts claim of the existence of several ground faults.

The regional office of the Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau (MGB) earlier declared a 10-hectare danger zone Monday afternoon. It described the sunken area as the most critical area, along and adjacent to the area of the public school where children still attend classes up to the present. Read the rest of this entry →

EDITORIAL: The rising clamor for change

July 19, 2009 in editorials

www.nordis.net

As the country’s economy further deteriorates primarily due to the on-going global economic crisis amid a political landscape that remains uncertain because of the administration’s maneuvering for Charter change, the peoples’ clamor for change is rising to fever pitch.

While most of our countrymen continue to pin their hopes in a change of the country’s leadership in the much-anticipated elections next year for change to take place, there are those who, while recognizing the value of a leadership-change in initiating meaningful change, look beyond the elections for change to really take place. ADVOCATE’S OVERVIEW: Multi-National corporations control our drug industry

July 19, 2009 in columns

By ARTHUR ALLAD-IW
www.nordis.net

The move of Sen. Mar Roxas urging the immediate lowering of prices of 21 commonly prescribed drugs is laudable.

However, it is just a tactical move in the real state of our drug industry, particularly in this present influenza pandemic where a cure is yet to be determined to cure this influenza strain. The real problem is still in the non-nationalization of the drug industry as this vital industry in the country is being controlled by Multi-National Corporations (MNCs). It is always a gift to ponder on our lives 20 years back but I cannot imagine living more after 30 years in this cancer-stricken world. The cancer of greed, power, discrimination, nepotism, undisciplined citizens, unchristian behavior and even technologies.

The “year of the Ox” embraces everyone, giving new hope for the coming year. Most people today are positive and enthusiastic to live as simplest and brightest as could be; but will it sustain their skeletal system up to the 365th day? Read the rest of this entry →

YOUTH SPEAK: Questioning the quest

July 19, 2009 in columns

By MA. REGINA MAMARIL
www.nordis.net

I was four and a half years old when I got accepted in a small, simple, coed school called the University of the Philippines Integrated School (U.P.I.S) in U.P. Diliman. Unlike the two other all-girls’ schools around Katipunan Avenue which I got accepted, I liked U.P.I.S better, not because it was more convenient since I wouldn’t have to pay the tutition fee (thanks to my dad who happens to be a professor in the University) but rather because the place looked more like a playground to me than a school.

It was in that school that I learned the two basic virtues in life — respect and courtesy. I learned to say “Excuse me” when pushing my way through the crowd of excited toddlers like me, “I’m sorry” when I happened to step on a kid’s foot, “Please” when I wanted a piece of Hershey’s chocolate bar my seatmate used to bring for recess, and “Thank you” each time he whole-heartedly gave me the whole bar even when I only ask for a piece of it. WEEKLY REFLECTIONS: Virus of corruption

July 19, 2009 in columns

By REV. LUNA L. DINGAYAN
www.nordis.net

How terrible for you, Scribes and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look fine on the outside but are full of bones and decaying corpses on the inside. In the same way, on the outside you appear good to everybody, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and sins. — Matthew 23:27-28

There is a virus called H1N1, popularly known as swine flu that is spreading throughout our country causing fear and panic among our people. Although some are saying that Dengue Fever is far worse than swine flu, the way it is being presented to the public by the Department of Health (DOH)has been causing panic rather than calmness among people.

Since this virus was discovered in Brazil, thousands have already been infected in various countries including rich nations like the US, and hundreds have died already. It is now spreading worldwide unstoppable according to the World Health Organization. And our country is never exempted from this deadly virus. Read the rest of this entry →
