NIA Kalinga to forego water cut off this May

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – At times of crisis, there are things, though crucial for development, that must be sacrificed for the sake of addressing present needs. Take for instance the Kalinga Provincial Irrigation Management Office-National Irrigation Administration (KPIMO-NIA) which has to forego with its yearly water cut-off of its irrigation canal.

“The yearly clearing of the irrigation canal and repair of damage structures is scheduled by KPIMO-NIA every May of the year. However, this will be foregone this time so that rice farmers serviced by the Upper Chico River Irrigation System (UCRIS) are given the chance to farm for the third cropping, “ Irrigation Superintendent Engr. John Socalo said.

He assured there are no major damages to repair that can affect the irrigation services or siltation problems along the canal that can disrupt or lessen the volume of water flow.

Socalo said the move of KAPIMO-NIA is to give a chance for farmers belonging to the vulnerable sector and affected by the global crisis to farm from the four -month gap period and to earn income and help their families sustain the basic needs.

It can be recalled that KPIMO-NIA collected surplus of P7.5 million last year from irrigation fees paid by farmers through the help of this city’s government and the office on agriculture services. Socalo said this added cropping serves also as channel for more government support to farmers in terms of certified seed subsidy, fertilizer support and other agricultural inputs assistance.#PIA-Kalinga
