Getting Lost: Lighten your footprint in 2008

I love walking barefooted on the sand. I think most people do, specially if the sand is super soft and white. It is amazing how leaving footprints on the sand can actually be a learning experience. In case you have not heard about the concept of “ecological footprint”, then this article is for you. This is my way of paving the way for more responsible travels for the coming year.

The first time I set foot on an uninhabited beach over at the Pacific side of Luzon I was awed by the sheer rawness of nature. I ran along the shore like a child until I can run no more. Then I walked and skipped and walked again. Baguio dads cautious this time

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 17) — The bid for Baguio City barangay officials’ cash incentive did not gather much support as some councilors did not favor a half-baked resolution, this time taking care to study all aspects in appropriating public funds.

Cordi fast becoming Arabica coffee capital

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 20) — Arabica coffee, among the best coffee variety worldwide, coffee enthusiasts say, may be adopted by Cordillera farmers as a livelihood or supplemental source of income.

Presidential Assistant Thomas Killip said that the commercial farming of Arabica coffee in the region is viable due to its temperate climate and natural conditions. He believes that the region’s potential in the coffee industry may transform the Cordillera as the Arabica coffee capital of the country but that entails the active participation of all stakeholders particularly the farmers. Taiwan protest RP killings at Austronesian forum

TAIPEI (Dec.11) — Members of the Taiwan Committee for Philippine Concerns (TCPC) staged a lightning protest addressed to the Philippine government representatives at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Austronesian Forum held in Taipei December 11.

Partnership seeks help for OFWs

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 15) — In a Christmas-cum-OFW family day party held in honor of OFWs and their families, Mrs. Marlene de Castro, executive director of Baguio Center for Young Adults (BCYA) announced the partnership between BCYA, Overseas Workers Welfare Administrations (OWWA) and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in a project for overseas Filipino workers and their families.

HIV/AIDS forum focuses on young girls

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 11) — “Conduct sex education to your children,” Councilor Atty. Betty Lourdes Tabanda appealed to the parents after a forum to support efforts in preventing Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) /Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among young women and girls on December 11 at the Baguio City Multi-Purpose Hall.

Dr. Celia Brillantes, head of the City Hygiene Clinic, said HIV is acquired only through semen, vaginal fluids, blood and breast milk. AIDS is the terminal stage of HIV, which can be transmitted in the course of sex, blood transfusion, organ transplant and even prenatal transmission through pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding. Japanese soldiers’ remains given proper rites in Ifugao

LAGAWE, Ifugao (Dec. 17) — Japanese officials exhumed the remains of Japanese soldiers who died in Ifugao during the World War II and accorded them Japanese burial rites last week.

A Japanese Mission composed of officials from the Japan Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and two Japanese nationals arrived in Banaue, Ifugao on December 10 and started the exhumation of Japanese soldiers’ remains in predetermined locations in Barangays Hapao and Abatan in Hungduan and Barangay Bokiawan in Kiangan town. It was a hundred years ago when Christianism first came to the land of the Igorots. A group of mostly Belgians together with a few Dutch priests came to the Mountain Provinces and took roots here. It was Valentine’s Day in 1906 when the apostolic delegate to the Philippines Msgr. Ambrosius Agius sent a letter of request to Father Adolf Van Hecke who was then the Superior General of the CICM congregation.

Huge RP flag flies over former US camp in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 18) — Now flying high over former American rest and recreation facility – Camp John Hay – a huge Philippine flag donated by DENR secretary Lito Atienza was hoisted Tuesday morning at the 20 meter pole where the Star Spangled Banner used to be raised.

Police burns marijuana plantation in Benguet

City officials draft anti-vending plan

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 21) — After a series of meetings with central business district barangay chiefs, a team of city officials led by city Administrator Peter Fianza drafted a general plan, Administrative Order (AO) 05, to snowball the city’s anti-vending campaign.

The AO allows vending from December 20, 2007 up to January 6, 2008 only. The draft order likewise provided for the payment of barangay clearances and special permits. A “no permit, no vending” policy shall strictly be implemented, the draft added.

Public school teachers feed 98 pupils

BAGUIO CITY (Dec. 21) – Baguio City teachers last Wednesday fed 98 of the poorest of their pupils together with their parents at the City Schools Division Office.

Guided by city schools superintendent, Dr. Ellen Donato, the teachers, through the Baguio City Association of Supervisors and School Heads headed by Dr. Elma Donaal, pooled some P15,000 for the annual project.

Pangasinan redistricting move up anew

PANGASINAN (Dec. 21) — Pangasinan representatives together with Atty. Raul Lambino are drafting a bill seeking the redistricting of the said province to add more representatives to the House of Representatives.

One of the suggestions is for the towns in the first, second and third districts to be grouped into five districts, and for the fourth, fifth and sixth district towns to compose the other five districts for Pangasinan to have a total 10 districts. The province have six districts at present.

Virginia tobacco floor prices increase

VIGAN CITY (Dec. 21) — The floor price of the flue-cured Virginia tobacco increased as a result of the recently concluded tripartite conference in National Tobacco Administration (NTA) in Quezon City on December 10.

Ilocos Sur Governor Deogracias Victor “DV” B. Savellano said the newly approved floor prices per kilo of Virginia tobacco are the following: Grades AA – P61.00; A – P59.00 ; B – P57.00; C –P55.00; D – P50.00; E – P49.00; F1 – P45.00; F2 – P42.00; and R – P23.00. Read the rest of this entry →
