Senseless death

Many have reacted when Catholic bishops regarded the deaths of soldiers in Mindanao as senseless, and that the President should put a stop to the war offensives going on. Well, in what way are the deaths senseless? Did they not die for the sake of our country? Soldiers are supposed to be there to defend our country from external aggression, but in reality they are there fighting against what they call “terrorists” who are also Filipinos like themselves. We, representatives of the indigenous women’s organizations and NGOs in Asia, gathered together in Baguio City, Philippines for the AIWN Coordination Council meeting and Capacity-Building Workshop for the Convention on Biological Diversity, from 15-19 August 2007, urge all the members-States of the UN General Assembly to vote for the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples before the end of its 61st session on 17 September 2007. Philex arrogance blamed for failed dialog

TUBA, Benguet (Aug. 16) — The government-set dialog to thresh out issues surrounding the disapproval by concerned indigenous peoples in Itogon and this town, of a mining permit application by the Philex Mining Corporation failed due to the company’s arrogance, a community leader said.

Youth gsroups hit proposed ROTC

BAGUIO CITY (Aug.16) – Militant and student groups condemned the proposed revival Reserved Officers Training Corps. (ROTC) program by Cebu 1st District Rep. Eduardo Gullas in a press conference at the University of the Philippines Baguio (UPB) here.

Gullas proposed the revival of ROTC saying the essence of service is not seen with National Service Training Program (NSTP). He added students are seen at malls during NSTP hours. Open pit campout dispersed

TUBA, Benguet (Aug. 16) —Residents of communities from the outskirts of a mineral land being applied for a mineral production sharing agreement (APSA 102) by Philex Mining Corporation, were dispersed by company-hired security forces early morning Wednesday.

ITOGON, Benguet (Aug. 16) — “Your presentations are very informative. But they cannot convince us because experience tells us differently. No matter what you say in your efforts to shed light on the issue, what our people see in before us is black.”

A schoolteacher told the representatives of the transnational firm Anvil Mining, Ltd. and its local business partner, Itogon-Suyoc Resources, Inc. (ISRI), in a consultation held on the 11th of August between the two companies and the constituency of Barangay Ampucao in the Municipality of Itogon, Benguet Province. The teacher’s words put an end to a two-hour debate between the small-scale miners of Ampucao and the large-scale mining company engineers regarding the impact of diamond drilling on their water sources. Baguio transport groups oppose tax increase

BAGUIO CITY (Aug. 17) – A transport group here branded a new tax measure as a move that would further impoverished the suffering transport sector as they submitted their petition August 16, at the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) against the government proposal increasing the common carrier tax by as high as 2,600%.

During the Thursday consultation the Baguio chapter of PISTON (Pagkaka-Isa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide) claimed they are already overburdened with payment of regressive taxes in the annual registration of their units, renewal of their franchise, road users tax, and value added tax on oil and other products.
