In the wake of political killings

BAGUIO CITY ( Jan. 25) — As the May election is fast approaching and candidacies are filed with the Commission on Elections, the election fever even surges in Abra with the announcements by alleged warring parties and individuals of their intention to run challenging each other, at least in the polls.

The latest announcement was made in Baguio City by the kin of the late Congressman Luis “Chito” Bersamin Jr. who is running for governor despite the absence of an admission by incumbent governor Vicente Valera that he is still seeking the gubernatorial seat. Read the rest of this entry →

Abra governor home

BANGUED, Abra (Jan. 25) — Governor Vicente P. Valera on Thursday, arrived for the first time since he was named the mastermind in the killing of Abra Rep. Luis “Chito” Bersamin on December 16, 2006.

Accompanied by his wife and Bangued Mayor Ma. Zita Valera and followed by their entourage numbering to around a hundred he proceeded and addressed his jubilant supporters and capitol employees numbering to around 300 telling them he was innocent on the charges that he masterminded the killing of Congressman Bersamin. As rift widens, it is business as usual for Panagbenga

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 26) — Amid reported a widening rift involving the city’s business sector, including that of the ambulant vendors believed to be perking up the underground economy, the city’s officials are confident the 2007 Panagbenga Flower Festival will push through smoothly.

“There’s just one problem with this year’s Panagbenga and that is the supply of flowers for the activities,” said Lawyer Damaso Bangaoet, the president of the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. Students oppose tuition hike

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 25) — Students of the University of the Philippines (UP)-Baguio staged a protest rally last January 23 and a candle lighting last January 24 to oppose the impending tuition fee increases in UP campuses.

The UP Board of Regents (BOR) is planning to implement tuition hike for incoming freshmen and transferees in major campuses. From the current P200 per unit UP Baguio incoming students would be paying P600 per unit. Tuition hikes in other UP campuses including Diliman, Los Baños and Manila is higher, from P300 per unit to P1000 per unit. Read the rest of this entry →

Soldiers kill 2 Cagayan farmers

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 21) — Two farmers were killed and three others were wounded including two teenagers after soldiers fired at them yesterday, January 21 in Carupian, Baggao, Cagayan.

Edralin Guduy, 28 and Alvin Fuentes died on the spot at around 3:00 PM in Sitio Bakong, Carupian where soldiers of the the 17th IB allegedly conducted a military operations against New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas. Cordi groups hit ASEAN anti-terror, agri pact

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 26)—Cordillera progressive organizations condemned the agreements on anti-terrorism and agriculture forged among ASEAN governments including the Philippines during the recently concluded summit in Cebu.

Court acquits Cid of libel

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 26) — A regional trial court here acquitted a local civic worker who was accused by a former highly-placed official for libel resulting from a taped interview with a local cable channel in 2004.

An elder inspires the defense of land

Ama Agustin Silot, nearly in his 70s, is the chairperson of the Aam-a ya Iin-a ay Manakem ad Abra, Mountain Province and upland Ilocos Sur (Am-in, or literally, recognized elderly men and women in Abra, Mountain Province and Ilocos Sur). In their community in Barangay Lamag, Quirino, Ilocos Sur, their indigenous practices are still intact. Leadership is still collectively led by the amam-a or elders through the dap-ay, an indigenous socio-political institution (ISPS).

Lamag can be reached through a seven-hour bus travel through the Halsema-Mankayan-Cervantes road. Lamag is also reached crossing the Abra River and trekking its mountain ranges that link with Tubo, in Abra and Besao, in Mountain Province. Read the rest of this entry →

Baguio POSD-vendors’s “cat-&-mouse game” go on

City prosecutor files raps vs. Jadewell boss

Itogon folk, Benguet LGUs hit DENR for assisting PMA land claim

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet (Jan. 23) – Affected residents in Itogon and Benguet local officials criticized the Land Management Services of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (LMS-DENR)-Cordillera for approving the survey plan of a housing cooperative involving some officials and employees of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) over a portion of land in Itogon despite overlapping land claims over the area.

The Headquarters Support Group PMA Housing Cooperative applied for the reclassification of a 30-hectare land between Barangay Gumatdang and Ucab, Itogon but was met with opposition from affected residents and municipal officials. Read the rest of this entry →

Workers asks Senate to adopt wage hike bill

DOLE secretary resignation sought

BAGUIO CITY (Jan. 25) – Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU)-Cordillera challenges the senators to uphold the long overdue demand of Filipino workers for a legislated wage increase and demanded the resignation of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Arturo Brion. It also enjoined labor to persevere in pushing for meaningful wages and benefits.

Abra cops nab drug traffickers

BANGUED, Abra (Jan. 25) — A supposed picnic along a river in remote Manabo town, in this province turned out to be a rendezvous of alleged drug traffickers.

Manabo town policemen caught red-handed Rafael Gunday, 36, and Lupang Batitao, 28, both from Kilong Olao, Boliney, Abra; Jerry Molina, 18, a student from Brgy Ayyeng, Manabo; Roberto Sapongen, 42, from Barangay Luzong, also in Manabo town and Peter Alunday, 36, a farmer from Barangay Tulgao, Tinglayan town in Kalinga. Advocate's Overview: Political dynasty

Politics is already being felt this early. Certain candidates are already seen on TV with their political advertisements despite campaign period still approaching. Look at those ads, as if Filipino situations have improved due to them. I am reminded of the nature of our politics – dominated by “trapos” or traditional politicians.

Related with our rotten political system and one of the hottest is the issue on political dynasty. Political dynasty was adopted as a provision of the 1987 constitution to address the political patronage system in our society, where the positions are controlled by the same people coming from the same clans or families. It started from the creation of Philippine state, where politics were dominated by the same names; who worked not for the interests of the people but for their selfish and their foreign masters’ interests. Brutally Frank: Session Road

With the objective of minimizing pollution and traffic along Session Road, the City Government implemented a traffic scheme disallowing parking along Session Road between 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. and between 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., which are the rush hours in the city. This scheme, however, brought inconvenience to motorists and customers of businesses along Session Road.

From Under This Hat: Avian flu

Last week, the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) in cooperation with the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture conducted a seminar-workshop with the help of UNICEF for members of the northern Luzon based journalists as part of the international campaign to contain the bird flu pandemic.

Among the twelve in attendance, three of us came from Baguio: Sonia Daoas from broadcast, Jane Cadalig and I from the print media. Sonia and I thought it was good to get away from the cold spell in Baguio but actually, it was away from the natural cold climate into the artificially cold air-conditioned rooms in the venue. Labor Watch: Working overtime

Joan works in Company A inside an Export Processing Zone (EPZ). She and her co-employees make insulator tubes for Company B inside the EPZ. Everyday, they have to produce 10,000 to 15,000 pieces of tubes within eight hours as needed by the company they are supplying.

One day, their boss told them to “re-fabricate” the tubes because they were “deformed”. Joan’s boss claimed Company B would not accept the “deformed” tubes. Their boss ordered them that they have to work overtime to “re-fabricate” the tubes without pay. Joan and her companions complained, their boss said that the company has the right to let them work overtime. Their boss argued that the Philippine Labor Code states that overtime work is legal and necessary to save their company’s reputation. Read the rest of this entry →
