Editorial: RP and Thailand: when parallels fail

September 23, 2006 in editorials, national, politics

The Sept. 19 coup that toppled Prime Minister Thaksin of Thailand has fuelled political talk among Filipinos.

It is tempting to draw parallels between the recent events here and in that other Southeast Asian country – as indeed many political observers are doing. We are mere dabblers in Thai history and society, but it’s clear that the parallelism has its limits. Read the rest of this entry →

Advocate's Overview: The other face of martial law

September 23, 2006 in columns, human rights, media

By ARTHUR L. ALLAD-IW

September 21 this year is the 34th year since martial law was declared by then President Ferdinand Marcos. Those dark years were characterized by various human rights violations – particularly extra-judicial killings. Up to the present, the victims and their kin have never received justice. In fact, the compensation for victims, which should come from the Marcos loot, remains in judicial battle.

My favorite media reporter Malou Echevarria of ABS-CBN Northern Luzon interviewed a radio announcer yesterday. The announcer denied that press freedom is being suppressed, and that martial law is a thing of the past. Read the rest of this entry →

Women's Front: DOJ is prejudicial against Nicole's case

September 23, 2006 in columns, human rights, women

Sec. Raul Gonzales and the DOJ panel should be investigated by no less than the Senate and the House of Representatives for their evidently biased position against Nicole in the Subic rape case trial. The Filipino people will not let the DOJ and (In)justice Secretary Raul Gonzales get away from making settlement offers and implying a trade-off with the Bolante case instead of supporting a young Filipino woman who was raped by four US Marines. Martial Law

On September 21, some thirty-four years ago, then Pres. Ferdinand E. Marcos declared martial law in our country in the guise “to save the republic and reform society.” However, what happened in more than a decade of Marcos Rule was the very opposite of what the regime had claimed to do. Our country was plunged into the long dark nights of fascist rule, where crying and weeping of widows and orphans were heard all over the land amidst the sarcastic laughter and merriment of the powers-that-be, feasting lavishly on the riches and beauty of our motherland.
