actually, the reckoning of mining issues and concerns we are having right now date back much earlier than RA 7942. the problem, as I see it, is that the government is passing laws not to correct a previously inept law or policy but rather to perpetuate or even impregnate such mistakes. perhaps, this is a result of the government not looking from the point of view of the majority Pinoy but only from the point of view of the privileged few. or from the mistaken notion that money can buy anything, e.g., it can buy peace and it can substitute for the natural devastation. .. i always keep wondering, is the mining rush in our country not only for the money but maybe salvaging what there is that we have while our dear land is still afloat and not yet drowned with the continuous melting of the earth's ice caps due to climate change... so that the money could be used by the privilege few of the world to fly to the moon or mars. just a comment...

I don't understand how this is could even be considered. Foreigners cannot own land or a business in Sagada.

How could a completely foreign owned company destroy the land around Sagada and give NO benefit to the people, except for the politicians.

By this logic we should bring in Shangri-La hotels and renew discussions to build a dam on the Chico river. It's obvious the politicians are only after money and would gladly sell out their town.

I wouldn't be surprised if this whole project will push through. Philcarbon is a subsidiary of the Sagada and Besao Corporation. Nevertheless, I am still crossing my fingers that it won't. How can PhilCarbon release such statement that the project will not destroy the environment and that it is beneficial to the community? Undeniably, it is beneficial in a way of "financial gains" for the LGU of both host towns. The LGU of Sagada and Besao will then receive royalty shares, 25% will go to the village, 40% to the municipality and 35% to the province. But how can they plan something without any concrete and explicit proposal which discusses details such as its adverse effects on nature as well as how these royalty shares can be put to use by the LGU of the host towns.

This country already has its own share of issues of where do really our taxes go. They should at least present a concrete plan on how these shares will be put to use and how the community can really benefit from it. But if it is something that can disrupt the ecology of the place, it is surely NOT A WIN-WIN situation between man and nature, we will all just have to wait for its adverse effects in the long-run and regret what we have done.

I'm sorry but it somehow sounds dodgy to me. It comes across as more of a money generating scheme instead of advocating the use of renewable energy for protecting the environment, especially when they said that Mt. Province consumes only 5-6 MW of electricity, and that the excess power the windmills will generate will be sold to the Luzon grid. Sometimes green business with all its vision of minimizing man's carbon footprint on earth can be actually be detrimental to nature, especially when nature is displaced for man's benefits.

Lastly, they say it will become another tourist attraction in Sagada and Besao, are we in need of another one to attract tourists? I don't think so.

Cellphone and Internet subscribers in Sagada and other places as far as some parts of Ilocos and Abra benefit from the Smart cell site in this town thus additional disk plates and antenna are added to provide better telecommunications service to its subscribers. But still it would be better for Smart to inform the people about whatever modifications they will do with the cell site. With regard to the benefits they have promised, it all seems to boil down to lip service then.

On the other hand, I believe that demanding for an increase in rental is not an enough reason for shutting it down, without first informing the public about it. Second, no specific detailed schedule of the the shutdown was laid out, subcribers were left in a limbo, waiting for it when it will be back. Third, for us postpaid cellphone and internet subscribers, who pay a specific amount monthly, we will still pay for these three days with no connection. And fourth, livelihoods which benefit from the connection are also affected.

I hope that the Smart and the parties involve will come up with a resolution regarding this issue since it is not just Smart and the people asking for a rental increase who are affected by this conundrum.
