By ANAKBAYAN UB CHAPTER
www.nordis.net

# nordis.net

WEEKLY REFLECTIONS: The tale of the wooden bowl

November 8, 2009 in columns, Featured, general

By REV. LUNA DINGAYAN
www.nordis.net

God’s curse on anyone who dishonors his father or mother — Deuteronomy 27:16
It is quite significant to note that we celebrate All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day in the month of November designated as Grandparents Month. And so, as we remember the lives of those who have gone ahead of us and remind ourselves of our divine task to care for the elderly, perhaps it would be good for us to seriously reflect on The Tale of the Wooden Bowl. PGMA the new Marie Antoinette

Living in luxury as Filipinos starve

We, members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Teachers’ Party-list, strongly condemn the lavish dinners and foreign travelsof Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo amidst the ever-worsening hunger and poverty problems of our country.

Shameless opulence and excessive luxury have no place in a third-world country like ours – grappling with huge foreign debts and perennial budget deficits along with millions of hungry mouths, malnourished children, foodless farmers and jobless workers. Read the rest of this entry →

Sugarcane wine and September

August 30, 2009 in general

By JUN VERSOLA

Last of two parts

For the benefit of aspiring small-scale mill and winery operators among us: a 5-hectare canefield planted to a non-flowering, highsucrose cane variety can produce juice for more than 200 cooking batches per season – enough supply for a veritable wine and vinegar factory.

But I didn’t write this piece merely to encourage cottage-industry capitalism. I wrote it to explain why basi became so explosive an issue during Spanish times that it triggered a revolt, the 200th anniversary of which we commemorate this month of September. Read the rest of this entry →

From under this hat: How to hide a garbage dump

August 23, 2009 in columns, general

By KATHLEEN OKUBO
www.nordis.net

Last weekend, on assignment, I had the opportunity to visit Cabugao, Ilocos Sur with some colleagues. While being shown around the town and asking questions about the town, I thought that maybe Baguio of the mid 50’s would have been like the Cabugao of today.

For Baguio that time, it did have a central city plan, the one made by Architect Daniel Burnham in 1905 to carry a population of some 20-25 thousand only. Baguio had a town-wide sewerage system wanting repair but working; a garbage disposal system which was composed of well placed garbage bins; a few garbage trucks but well organized collection system; a holding space and a large incinerator at what is still called Sanitary camp. Erratum: 9 August 2009

August 9, 2009 in general

www.nordis.net

The sixth paragraph on the article entitled “Killer of Tulgao folk now in Bontoc jail”, on page two of last week’s issue (02 August) should read: “On the other hand, text messages were reportedly circulated in the Mt. Province by malicious and irresponsible individuals that alleged retribution killings. This only created unnecessary tension, fear and mistrust among members of the communities where the victim and the suspect are from. …”
We apologize for the misquote and any anxiety it may have caused. — Editors

BAGUIO CITY — A group of multinational companies (MNCs) producing petrochemical farm supply is now embarking on retrieving pesticide containers buying back empty bottles, plastic containers and sachets from farmers in a Benguet pilot area.

Farmers in the Loo Valley in Buguias, Benguet started collecting their refuse since April, according to Bayer-Philippines Technical Services Manager Florence Vasquez. Bayer is among six MNCs allied with the CropLife, which is spearheading the retrieval project, as part of their respective community social responsibility (CSR) agenda. Read the rest of this entry →

An ungrateful man is like a hog under a tree eating acorns, but never looking up to see where they come from. — Timothy Dexter

The mineworkers but accept the pegged amount as they have their stomachs and their families to feed. Most of them have children who are studying in the colleges and universities in Baguio City. Mentor's Corner: Balaku sa mo? (I thought)

“Taning” (defined life expectancy) is the most dreaded word one would to be commended for. Even during submission of reports, deadlines makes one crazy when one is unprepared.

Well, I am not a practicing doctor nor one who administers ‘euthanasia’ when requested but I gave myself a five-year chance to prove myself worthy and get married or else I shall bid goodbye to the land of the mountains (that was a decade ago). “Balaku sa mo… a Kapampangan term which means ‘akala ko’ I could never have what I wanted, a good and stable job, love life and offspring. Thank God my foster land accepted me without hesitation. I even got a bonus lately of having a position every mentor will ever dream of. Read the rest of this entry →

Pokus: City’s extravagant garbage disposal

July 26, 2009 in general

By IRENE CEBA
www.nordis.net

The Irisan dumpsite cannot contain the City’s garbage anymore. The only resort as of now is to haul the garbage to a Tarlac landfill area. Councilor Rocky Thomas Balisong said that the best solution is for the city to come up with its own sanitary landfill. He said, in an interview, that the council is still in a long process of negotiating and conducting surveys, however, he also said that this garbage crisis needs an immediate action.

The city government allocated 70 million pesos for the maintenance of the city’s garbage hauling. And is spending 48,000 pesos per trip. Six trips are needed every day to bring the garbage to Tarlac. That is 288,000pesos a day and a total of 1,561,000 per week. This bothers not only the government officials but especially the people for the fund is extracted from the public taxes and that may be spent on other important concerns of the public if only the garbage maintenane did not cost that much.
