Thousands of the faithful lay Fr. Ventura to rest

TUGEGARAO CITY (updated 8 May 2018 8:00 am) – Thousands attended the interment of slain Catholic priest, Mark Ventura today, May 7 at the city’s public cemetary.

The head of the archdiocese, Most Reverend Sergio Utleg led the the funeral mass at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral. Con-celebrants were bishops and clergy representatives from other congregations in Northern Luzon and Manila.

In his homily, Utleg said the perpetrators are a product of a social system that forces people into killing because of poverty. He also challenged all the clergy to persevere in performing their duties in serving the poor.

Motor-cycle-riding assassins shot Ventura, 37, who died on the spot. The attackers approached him while he was talking to choir members and blessing kids. He just finished giving mass at Barangay Piña Weste Gymnasium in Gattaran, Cagayan.

The young cleric, assigned to San Isidro Labrador Mission Station in Mabuno, in the same town, is an advocate of indigenous people’s rights, environmental protection and good governance.

His family and the Police Regional Office 2 of the Philippine National Police offered a P300,000 reward for any information that can lead to the suspects and mastermind of the murder. #
