BAGUIO CITY — The Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA) is all set to hold the 34th Cordillera Day in a regionally centralized gathering at Pacday Quinio Elementary School in Barangay Asin Road here on April 22 to 25.

Hosted by the Metro Baguio chapter of CPA, Tongtongan ti Umili and Ibagiw, alliance of Ibaloy ancestral land claimants in the city, the centralized celebration dubbed as the “Cordillera Peoples Caravan Against Tyranny” will see delegates from the six Cordillera provinces along with national and international guests.

Former Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Judy Taguiwalo is set to give a keynote address on the occasion. Former Bayan Muna representative Teddy Casiño will also speak during the occassion.

Centered on the theme “Unite to resist tyranny! Assert our right to self-determination!” the celebration will play host to the launching of the regional formation of the local multi-sectoral alliance Movement Against Tyranny as response to the attacks of the Duterte administration against the people.

CPA will also draw up a resolution on the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) terrorist proscription petition against the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army that included CPA leaders on a list of more than 600 individuals accused as terrorists.

The celebration will also feature an educational discussion festival, including situational updates on national and regional issues, and workshops on issues confronting indigenous peoples in the Cordillera. There will also be a workshop with the Dap-ayan ti Kultura iti Kordilyera on Cordilleran art, music, and dances.

A march-rally in the city’s main streets will culminate this year’s celebration.

First celebrated in 1984 in Sadanga, Mountain Province, the Cordillera Day traces its roots to the Macli-ing Memorial, commerating the martyrdom of anti-Chico Dam struggle martyr Macli-ing Dulag.

The government celebrates their Cordillera day every July 15 to commemorate the signing of Executive Order 220 that created the Cordillera Administrative Region. # nordis.net
