VIGAN CITY — Local formation of Anakbayan here in the province called on the Filipino people especially the Ilocano Youth to strongly oppose the plans of the Duterte government to allow the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The youth group also said that Marcos is not a hero but a fascist dictator, corrupt, gross human rights violator, and a puppet of US Imperialism.

“Marcos Sr. does not deserve even a little spot in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. He stole billions from public funds and he victimized millions of Filipinos. He is a gross human rights violator. This action sends a wrong signal that the state is celebrating a life of an individual who committed crimes against humanity and was a plunderer”, Glenn Mendoza of Anakbayan Ilocos said.

Mendoza also reminded Duterte not to give favors to Bongbong Marcos through burying the latter’s father in Libingan ng mga Bayani. Bongbong and Duterte are known to be good friends.

“Marcos burial in the Libingan ng mga Bayani is a grave injustice to all the victims of Martial Law, especially here in Ilocos Region. Even here in the so-called ‘Marcos Country’, people are not spared from rampant killings, harassment, torture, and illegal arrest and detention. The worst part is up until now, the Marcoses refuses to apologize but instead are justifying their crimes”, Mendoza added.

The youth leader cited rights violation cases during the Martial Law in the town of Vintar, Dumalneg, Solsona, Marcos, and Piddig. She also added, that even indigenous communities, such as the Yapayao and Isneg, were forced to evacuate from their ancestral lands during the Marcos regime. Mendoza also said that the Marcos family were already reinstated in power rather than paying their committed crimes in jail.

“Duterte should not commit the same mistake of not decisively punishing the Marcoses. Burying the dictator in the Libingan ng mga Bayani will only further historical amnesia among the younger generations. It is no different from giving tribute to a drug lord, plunderer, and a murderer.”, the youth leader ended. # nordis.net
