VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur — Political kingpin Luis “Chavit” Singson will run as Vice Governor while his son, incumbent Governor Ryan Luis Singson will seek reelection.

But the patriarch of the Singson clan was not present during the filing of their Certificate of Candidacy (CoC). The younger Singson was accompanied by members of their provincial slate and his father-in-law Vice Governor Deogracias Victor Savellano who filed his (CoC) for First Congressional District Representative. All three are running under the Nacionalista Party (NP).

Ryan is the most recent Singson scion to enter politics. He ran and won as Vigan City Vice-Mayor in the 2010 elections but eventually resigned and filed for the congressional seat after his older brother, incumbent Representative Ronald Singson was forced to resign his position after he was convicted for a drug-related case in Hong Kong. He became the youngest governor in 2013 after a landslide victory over Roque Versoza.

The son and father tandem is challenged by candidates from the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) – Benito Aguilar and Rosalia Rodriguez for governor and vice-governor respectively.

Congressional Districts

A two-way fight for the congressional post in the First District of Ilocos Sur was sealed yesterday, the last day of filing for CoC, as Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Christian “Basi” Purisma filed his CoC as an independent candidate for the post an hour before the deadline. Incumbent Representative Ronald Singson is no longer qualified as he is serving his third term.

Purisima, a former mayor of San Ildefonso town before running for the provincial board hails from the ruling political family of the town.

Three candidates will be contending for the congressional seat. Congressman Eric Singson, a Liberal Party (LP) stalwart filed for reelection. He will face Henry Capela, an independent candidate from Narvacan and Mediatrix Balicdang of PDP-Laban.

Provincial Board

Incumbents Jermias Singson, a brother of Chavit and Jaime Singson, nephew of Eric are running for reelection as Provincial Board Members for the First and Second Congressional districts respectively. Jerry, is a veteran politician who served from municipal to provincial level positions. He is running under NP. While Jaime entered politics last 2013 elections and is under the LP. Other incumbent board members who are running for the same post are Jocel Gironella, Pablito Sanidad, Jr. both from the Second District and Constante Oandasan from the Fisrt District all belonging to NP.

Other aspirants for the board are: Christopher Baterina, Benedicto Savellano and Mika Mendoza all under NP; Efren Rafanan, Elmer Arconado, Jose Ines and Noel Unciano under KBL; Marjorie Rafanan of LDP, and Ronnie Rapanut and William Pacpaco both independent, all for the first district.
