TUGUEGARAO CITY – The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyer (NUPL) and Karapatan Cagayan Valley, hosted a simple Dinner meeting to honor Bayan Muna Representative Neri J. Colmenares, here last March 5, 2015 at Hotel Roma.
Congressman Colmenares, a long time human rights lawyer, and incumbent Chairperson of NUPL, a nationwide voluntary association of human rights lawyers committed to the defense, protection, and promotion of human rights, especially for the poor and the oppressed.
In a short program, Atty. Catherine Salucon, NUPL Regional coordinator of Cagayan Valley, introduced their guest and gave a short background of what was NUPL is.
Congressman Colmenares then spoke and discussed Peoples’ Lawyering. Encouraging the lawyers, law students and students, to become a member of NUPL; to be a peoples’ lawyer or paralegal for the poor and oppressed.
According to him, he became a lawyer for the people because when he was a political prisoner incarcerated in Nueva Vizcaya in the 80’s on trumped-up charges filed against him, he was touched and inspired by the lawyer who handled his case, who was determined and did not mind the distances that he needed to travel to attend the hearings, just to prove Cong. Colmenares’ innocence.
Around 50 individuals attended the dinner, that included government and private lawyers; activists from the Kabataan Partylist, Kalikasan Youth; organizations such as SELDA, National Union of Students of the Philippines, College Editors Guild of the Philippines; peasants from Kagimungan; Media people and students from Cagayan State University, University of Cagayan Valley, Saint Paul University of the Philippines and some private Individuals.
The said gathering lasted about 4 hours, wherein Colmenares continued to share about the current national issues, such as the Mamasapano tragic incident, the power shortage, and some reasons why B.S. Aquino should resign from presidency. Saying that “In order for the peace processes to work, the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) should first address the roots of conflict, by genuine land reform.” he even added that Philippines has the longest and most expensive running agrarian reform program.
According to him, the call for Aquino to resign did not just come up overnight; it is a result of an analysis of the overall 4 year-span of his absurd rule. Under this bloody BS Aquino administration, many lives have been sacrificed; Mamasapano wasn’t the first incident that Aquino was accountable to.
On the early stage of his presidency, the Quirino Grandstand Hostage taking took place, Aquino already showed incapability to rule, make the right decisions and stand for our nation, but still the Filipino people chose to give him a chance believing that the president was just adjusting to his new position as the leader of the nation. Hoping that he would learn fast to be a good leader.
Two years before the end of his term, he once again made a huge mistake, and once again denied that he was accountable for these crimes; like the Disbursement Acceleration Program, Yolanda fund corruption and abandonment of Yolanda victims, Enhance Defense Cooperation Agreement. His “tuwid na daan” meets its dead end.
The Filipino people are sick of his alibis and for pointing the blame to other people. By this, his incapability to rule our nation and for the crimes that he is accountable for, he should step down from the presidency and face the charges. # nordis.net
