Status quo in Beneco

Low turnout in polls

BAGUIO CITY (Nov. 28) — The Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) shall remain a non-stock cooperative after the November 25 referendum failed to meet the quorum set by the National Electrification Administration (NEA).

The NEA requires a 50% plus one voters’ turnout for the referendum. Only 9% in Baguio City and 21% in Benguet showed up in the various polling sites.

Referendum results showed that the total votes cast was 14,769 or 15.58% of the total of official voters, which is 94,816. Of the 14,769 combined Baguio City and Benguet voters 9,250 voted for non-stock cooperative and 5,519 voted for stock cooperative.

The referendum results showed that the voters’ turnout in Benguet was higher than in Baguio City. Out of the 51,747 total voters of Benguet, 11,069 or 21.39% casted their votes. In Baguio, only 3,700 or 8.59% of the total 43,069 voted.

Despite the disparity in voters’ turnout, the option for non-stock cooperative had it in both areas. # Kim Quitasol for NORDIS
